Sauna Before or After a Massage? Steam, Jacuzzi and Massage in the Right Order

Heat first, hands second, rest last. Why the steam goes before the massage and the cool jacuzzi after, what the Vietnamese rule about showering after xông hơi actually protects, when to eat, how often to steam, and two afternoons for two costed to the đồng.

Sauna before or after a massage? It is one of the most-searched questions about a spa afternoon, and the answers online split down the middle: heat first to warm the muscle, or heat after to "flush" what the massage released. This page is our answer for the three things we actually run at Nghê Prana, a riverside hotel spa on the Thu Bồn at Cẩm Nam, Hội An: a private Vietnamese herbal steam (xông hơi), a private jacuzzi you fill hot or cold, and the massage between them. It is written from three pieces in Vietnam's Ministry of Health newspaper on xông hơi and from the massage textbooks on our shelf, and it says plainly where those sources run out.

The short answer

QuestionOur answerWhySource
Steam before or after the massage? Before. Never straight after.Warm muscle takes the hands sooner, and a body that has just spent an hour on the table does not need a second heat load.Lidell p. 161; Werner pp. 258, 288
Jacuzzi before or after?Hot water before, cool water after. Never from the steam straight into cold water.Hot before does the steam's job; cool after closes the afternoon without more heat.Vietnamese guidance below; Werner p. 288
Should I shower before a massage? If you have been in the sun, yes; otherwise the steam does it. Rinse the oil off after the massage, not after the steam. The Vietnamese rule is about water on a sweating body, not about being clean.SK&ĐS 2018, 2023
Eat before?Lightly, and finish before you arrive. Not full, not hungry.Steam on a full stomach, or an empty one, is the one thing every Vietnamese source forbids.SK&ĐS 2018, 2021
Alcohol? Not before the steam or the jacuzzi.Every source says so; heat and alcohol both lower blood pressure.SK&ĐS 2018, 2021, 2023
Steam every day of a stay? No. Once in a three-night stay.Dry-sauna guidance leaves at least three days between sessions.SK&ĐS 2018
Massage two days in a row?Yes, if the second day is lighter. The textbooks warn about overtreatment, not about frequency.Werner p. 125; Davies pp. 70–72

Page numbers are the printed pages: Werner, A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology, 5th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins); Lidell and others, The Book of Massage (1984); Davies and Davies, The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook, 3rd edition (New Harbinger); Mumford, The Massage Bible (Sterling, 2009). SK&ĐS is Sức khỏe & Đời sống, the Ministry of Health's newspaper; the three pieces are dated 9 November 2018, 29 April 2021 and 7 August 2023, and were read on 29 September 2026. Prices were read from our spa menu the same day.

Heat first, hands second, rest last, and why

The oldest manual on our shelf settles the order in one line. Lidell's Book of Massage, describing a relaxing massage after exertion, says: "Ideally, let your partner begin with a warm bath or shower, then cover the body with warmed towels for a few minutes" (p. 161). Mumford, twenty-five years later, gives the same advice for the evening: "Have a warm bath or shower a few hours before bed and apply some relaxing oils" (pp. 378–379). Warmth before the hands is the tradition in every book we own, and it is the reason our steam runs twenty or thirty minutes before the massage rather than after it: the therapist is not spending the first quarter of the hour getting you there. Our steam is the private Vietnamese herbal one, lemongrass and local herbs, described on our xông hơi page; it is not a dry Finnish sauna, and the Vietnamese guidance below was written for both.

The case against heat afterwards is in Werner. A massage relaxes you and lowers the pressure in your blood vessels, which is why she notes that people on blood-pressure medication "may feel dizzy or lethargic — this means they may need more time after a massage to make the transition back to full speed" (p. 258). Heat does the same again: excessive sweating "may lead to low blood pressure, lightheadedness, and fainting", and "fast hydration is the best recourse" (p. 288). Stack the two, a hot steam on top of an hour on the table, and you are stacking two drops in blood pressure on a body that is already short of water. That is not dangerous for a healthy adult, but it is why the half hour after the massage on this page is cool water, tea and a chair, not a second sweat.

The Vietnamese rule about the shower

Anyone who grew up with xông hơi knows the rule: you do not wash straight after. Three pieces in Sức khỏe & Đời sống, the Ministry of Health's newspaper, give it in three strengths. ThS. Hoàng Khánh Toàn, writing on dry sauna in 2018, is the strictest: "Sau khi xông hơi khô không nên tắm lại ngay dù là tắm nước lạnh hay nước ấm" (after a dry sauna, do not bathe again straight away, whether in cold or warm water), and he wants at least six hours. A 2021 piece by Minh Thảo repeats the ban, hot or cold. ThS.BS. Phạm Đức Thắng of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, writing on herbal steam in 2023, is the most practical: dry the whole body with a towel, change into dry clothes, drink warm water rather than cold, and "không nên tắm ngay sau khi xông" (do not bathe immediately after steaming). Our reading is that the rule is about cold water on a body that is still sweating, not about being clean, and our sequence is built to honour it: after the steam you are dried, given warm tea and taken to the table, and the only water you meet is sixty or ninety minutes later, after the massage, when you rinse the oil off under the rain shower or step into the jacuzzi. Nobody goes from the steam room into cold water here, and we will say so if you ask for it.

The jacuzzi: hot or cold, before or after

The jacuzzi is the one part of the afternoon you set yourself. It is private, never shared, filled fresh for your booking, and you tell us hot or cold when you arrive; it needs no notice. That choice decides its place in the order. Hot water before the massage does exactly what the steam does, warms the muscle and slows you down, so if you want both hot soaks, take them together before the table, the way our long afternoon below runs. Cool water after the massage is the closing we suggest for most of the year in Hội An: it rinses the oil, it brings you back from the drowsy end of a treatment without a second heat load, and it is the one moment of the afternoon that is refreshing rather than warm. For two people it is 300,000₫ each for thirty minutes or 400,000₫ each for forty-five, drinks and cut fruit included, and the room it opens off is described on our private jacuzzi page.

Two sequences we run, costed

SequenceThe stepsTimeTotal for two
Steam first, cool water lastXông hơi 20 min together, then a 60-minute relaxing oil massage each, then the jacuzzi 30 min together, coolabout 2 hours2,000,000₫
The long oneJacuzzi 45 min together, hot, then xông hơi 30 min together, then a 90-minute Vietnamese herbal massage eachabout 3 hours2,800,000₫

The arithmetic, so you can check it: the first sequence is 250,000₫ of steam, a 450,000₫ massage and 300,000₫ of jacuzzi per person, 1,000,000₫ each, doubled. The second is 400,000₫ of jacuzzi, 300,000₫ of steam and a 700,000₫ massage per person, doubled; it is the same afternoon, at the same total, as the long one on our couples massage page. Alone, the first sequence is 300,000₫ of steam, the same massage and 400,000₫ of jacuzzi, 1,150,000₫; the steam and the jacuzzi are the only two things on the menu that get cheaper per head when there are two of you. At the 26,000₫ rate we use across the site, 2,000,000₫ is about US$77 and 2,800,000₫ about US$108. Prices read from the live spa menu on 29 September 2026; the times include the drying-off and the tea, not only the treatment minutes.

The Vietnamese sources agree on the stomach more than on anything else. Toàn lists among those who should not steam anyone "say rượu, ăn quá no hoặc đang quá đói", drunk, too full or too hungry; Thảo writes that one must "tuyệt đối không được xông hơi sau khi uống rượu hoặc ăn no", absolutely not steam after drinking or a full meal; Thắng puts "vừa uống rượu bia", having just drunk, first on his list. Our guidance follows them: a light meal, finished before you arrive rather than on the way in, and no wine before the steam or the jacuzzi. If you have been in the sun all day, the steam is the wrong first step and a cool jacuzzi may be the only heat-free part of the menu you want; our page on massage when you are sunburned, sick or hungover covers when to wait and what to choose instead.

Rest last: tea, water and a chair, and no second sweat after the massage.

How often: steam once, massage twice

This is the part that costs us a sale, so it is worth stating. Toàn's dry-sauna piece says not to steam on consecutive days and to leave at least three days between sessions; Thảo suggests once or twice a week; Thắng warns that repeated sessions "sẽ khiến cơ thể bị mất nước, bệnh thêm nặng", dehydrate the body and make an illness worse. On a two- or three-night stay that means one steam, not one a day, and we will not book you a second. Massage is different. None of our textbooks sets a frequency; what they warn about is dose. Werner's word is overtreatment, which "could leave them sore" (p. 125); Davies's advice for a tender point is "don't try to kill the trigger points. Just improve the circulation. Let your body do the healing" (pp. 70–72). Two days in a row is fine if the second is lighter: the oil massage after the herbal one, or the foot massage after a full body. Count the hot stone massage as heat, not as a light day; steam plus hot stone is two heat loads, and we would put the steam on the other day.

Who should skip the heat altogether

  • Pregnancy. All three Vietnamese pieces list "phụ nữ có thai" among those who should not steam. Skip the steam and the hot jacuzzi and book the side-lying pregnancy treatment instead; that page explains from Werner why it is side-lying.
  • High blood pressure that is not controlled, or heart medication. Thắng excludes "bị tăng huyết áp mà chưa kiểm soát tốt"; Werner writes that many people with cardiovascular disease "should avoid total immersions in favor of smaller, localized hydrotherapy applications" (p. 504) and that with beta blockers hydrotherapy "is generally safer with local applications than systemic immersions in hot tubs, saunas, or other facilities" (p. 505). Take the massage on its own; our page on what to tell your therapist has the rest.
  • A fever, or the day after one. Thắng lists "người đang bị sốt"; Werner's account of heat exhaustion (p. 288) is the reason to add nothing hot to a body already running warm.
  • Alcohol in the last few hours. Every source above.

What this page is not

We are a hotel spa, not a clinic, and this is the order we run, not a prescription. None of the eight massage books on our shelf has a chapter on whether to take a sauna before or after a massage; the lines above are the closest they come, and we have quoted them rather than stretched them. The Vietnamese guidance is written for dry saunas and for the home steam-for-a-cold, not for a spa's twenty-minute herbal steam, and its numbers disagree with each other: six hours before a shower is one author's figure, "not immediately" is another's. Where they agree, we follow them; where they do not, we say which we chose.

How to book

Nghê Prana Riverside Hotel & Spa, Hẻm 384 Nguyễn Tri Phương, Cẩm Nam, Hội An, Đà Nẵng 51312, on the Thu Bồn. Tell us the sequence you want and, for the jacuzzi, hot or cold; treatments need about an hour's notice and the jacuzzi none. You do not have to be staying with us. The two-person version of every step is on the couple spa page, and the full price list is on the wellness page.
