The Most Romantic Things to Do in Hội An — Twelve Ideas From a Riverside Hotel That Hosts Honeymooners

Twelve genuinely romantic things to do in Hội An for couples — sunset on the Thu Bồn, full-moon lantern nights, a couple spa with a private jacuzzi, a herbal bath for two, sunrise in the Old Town, bicycle rides to Cẩm Kim, a basket boat at Cẩm Thanh, and a beach morning at An Bàng — each with practical detail on when, how, and roughly what it costs.

The most romantic things to do in Hội An are quiet and unhurried: watch the sunset over the Thu Bồn river, float a lantern together on a full-moon night, share a couple spa with a private jacuzzi, take a herbal bath for two, and cycle the empty island lanes at first light. Below are twelve ideas a couple can actually build a trip around, each with practical detail on when to do it, how, and roughly what it costs. We have written them hotel-side, from the south bank of the Thu Bồn at Cẩm Nam, from the honeymoons and anniversaries we host through the year.

1. Watch the sunset over the Thu Bồn river

The single most romantic thing in Hội An costs nothing. The Thu Bồn runs gold in the last hour of light, fishing boats turn to silhouettes, and the far bank glows. Claim a riverbank spot, a balcony, or a quiet bar terrace about forty-five minutes before the listed time. Our sunset guide has the times through the year; a riverside room at Nghê Prana puts the whole show outside your window. Cost: free.

2. Float a lantern on a full-moon night

On the fourteenth day of each lunar month the Old Town switches off its electric lights and silk lanterns take over. Buy a small paper candle-lantern from a riverside seller (roughly 10,000–20,000 VND, well under a dollar), make a wish, and set it onto the Thu Bồn together. Our lantern festival page and 2026 lantern calendar list the exact full-moon dates so you can plan around one. The lights-off lanes are pure romance — and our noctourism piece explains why the dark sky makes them so.

3. Share a couple spa with a private jacuzzi

A side-by-side massage in a private riverside room, with a jacuzzi held for your booking alone, is the centrepiece of most honeymoons here. Soak together first, then a sixty- or ninety-minute couples massage, then a slow rest with tea. Time the close for sunset and you finish as the river turns gold. See our couple spa page, the private-jacuzzi spa page, and our full couple spa guide. Book a day or two ahead in peak season; pricing scales with length and whether a herbal bath is included — we quote ours on the wellness page.

4. Take a Vietnamese herbal bath for two

Add a herbal steam — xông hơi — to your spa afternoon and it becomes a ritual. Lemongrass, ginger, and lemon leaves are simmered to release their oils as steam; it is a central-Vietnam household tradition, not a spa invention. Paired either side of a massage it warms the muscle and brings the body down gently. Allow a generous half-day for the unhurried version. Details are on our wellness page.

5. Walk the Old Town at sunrise

Between six and eight in the morning the Ancient Town belongs to you. The Japanese Covered Bridge, the yellow merchant houses, and the riverfront are quiet, the light is soft, and your photographs come out without a crowd in them. Cycle the ten minutes in from the river, find a coffee, and be back before the heat. Cost: a bicycle (often free for hotel guests) and a coffee.

6. Cycle to Cẩm Kim island

Across the water lie flat, green, almost traffic-free island lanes. Cycle a slow loop through Cẩm Kim past carpenters'' workshops and rice fields, or take the short ferry. It is the part of Hội An couples remember most, precisely because nothing happens there. Go in the cool early hours; carry water. Our guide to the quiet islands of Cẩm Nam, Cẩm Kim and Cẩm Thanh has the routes. Cost: bicycle, plus a small ferry fee.

7. Ride a basket boat at Cẩm Thanh

The round bamboo basket boats of the Cẩm Thanh coconut-palm waterways are touristy but genuinely fun as a pair — a boatwoman paddles you through the water-coconut channels, often spinning the boat for laughs. Go in the morning before the bigger groups; expect a modest per-boat fare you can agree in advance. Our Cẩm Thanh coconut village guide has the detail.

8. Spend a slow morning at An Bàng beach

Fifteen minutes from the river, An Bàng is soft sand, palm-shaded loungers, and relaxed beach cafés. Have a long breakfast with your feet near the water and swim before the sun is high. Our An Bàng beach guide covers loungers, cafés, and timing. Cost: a lounger and a leisurely meal.

9. Take a cooking class together

A half-day cooking class — often starting with a market visit and a short boat ride — is a hands-on, laughter-filled way to spend a morning as a couple, and you leave knowing how to make mì Quảng or fresh spring rolls at home. Book a day ahead; most classes run a fixed per-person price including the market and lunch you cook.

10. Watch the moon and stars from a riverside balcony

The quietest romance in Hội An needs no booking at all: the moon and stars over the Thu Bồn from a riverside balcony. Away from the centre, the south bank at Cẩm Nam keeps a darker sky, and on the nights around the full moon the river holds the light. We think it is the best place in Hội An to watch the river, the sunset, and the moon and stars — which is why we wrote a whole page on the moon over the river. Cost: free, and ours.

11. Take a private river boat at golden hour

Hire a small wooden boat for an hour and have the Thu Bồn to yourselves as the light drops — out past the fishing boats, back as the lanterns come on. Agree the price and the hour with the boatman before you step in; late afternoon into dusk is the slot to ask for. Our Thu Bồn river page explains why the river is the spine of the whole town.

12. Linger over a riverside dinner

End any day with an unhurried dinner on the water — order slowly, let the light go down over the Thu Bồn, and stay for one more drink. A late-afternoon spa or a sunset boat hands you straight into it. This is the rhythm a Hội An honeymoon is best at: do less, eat slowly, and give the evening to the river.

How to string these together

You do not need all twelve. Pick a sunrise walk, a couple spa, a lantern night, and a beach morning and you have a romantic trip already. Our four-day honeymoon itinerary sequences them day by day, and if you are still choosing a base, our honest Hội An or Da Nang comparison helps. The common thread is the river: choose a riverside honeymoon base on the Thu Bồn, keep the evenings slow, and let Hội An do the rest. We would love to host the two of you at Nghê Prana.
