Hội An in the German School Holidays 2027: Why Your State Decides Whether You Get Rain

There is a question no Vietnam guide answers, because it needs two datasets nobody lays side by side: when exactly does your federal state break, and what is the weather doing in Hội An that week? The answer is uncomfortably concrete. A family from Hesse and a family from Bavaria book the same summer holidays, fly to the same place, and one sits in the dry while the other lands at the start of the rainy season. Not because they planned worse, but because the state education ministers put their holidays five weeks later.

TL;DR — Hội An's dry season runs February to August, the rainy season September to December, with flooding peaking in October and early November. Summer 2027 starts in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland on 28 June — the middle of the dry season. Bavaria has holidays from 2 August to 13 September 2027, so its final third already sits in the changeover. Autumn 2027 is the worst of all: North Rhine-Westphalia from 23 October, Bavaria 1 to 5 November — both squarely in flood season. Germans have entered Vietnam visa-free for 45 days since 15 March 2025, and since 1 June 2026 a digital health declaration is required in advance.

Your 2027 holidays, laid against the weather in Hội An

The most important line on this page is the last one: Easter 2027 beats any week of the summer holidays for Hội An. Late March is dry, pleasantly mild rather than oppressive, and in Vietnam there is a window of almost seven weeks with no domestic holiday at all between the end of the Tết travel wave (20 February) and Hùng Kings' Day (16 April). If you have school-age children and a choice between Easter and summer, take Easter.

Why the rainy season means something different here than in Thailand

In Thailand, rainy season usually means a heavy shower in the afternoon and sunshine afterwards. In Hội An it means something else, and German trip reports confuse the two regularly.

Hội An sits on a river in an alluvial plain, and parts of the Old Town genuinely stand in water most years between October and mid-November — not ankle-deep for two hours, but for days. The town is set up for it: shops move their stock upstairs, business continues on the first floor, and boats travel through lanes you would otherwise walk. It is not an emergency. It is also not a beach holiday.

In fairness: October and November are the cheapest months of the year, the countryside is spectacularly green, and Vietnamese domestic tourism is practically absent. If you travel without children and rain does not bother you, it is a good time. With school-age children in the autumn holidays, it is the wrong one.

Entry: 45 days without a visa — and a new form

The part where many German-language pages are still out of date.

Visa-free, 45 days. Since 15 March 2025, German nationals need no visa for stays of up to 45 days. The arrangement runs until August 2028. Arrival and departure days each count as a full day.

The 30-day lock-out is gone. Two visa-free entries used to require a 30-day gap. That rule was abolished in 2025 — so you can leave for Cambodia or Laos mid-trip and come back without difficulty.

What the passport has to do: at least six months' validity on entry, two blank pages. Have an onward or return ticket to hand; it is more often the airline at check-in that asks than Vietnamese border control.

New since 1 June 2026: all travellers must complete a digital health declaration online before arrival. It is not a visa and costs nothing, but it is an extra step older guidebooks do not know about. Do it in the days before departure, not at the gate.

This is the position as of August 2026. Entry rules are the perishable good among travel information — check the current state with your foreign ministry shortly before departure, and do not rely on any undated page. This one included.

Getting there: why you do not fly to Hội An

Hội An has no airport. The destination airport is Đà Nẵng (DAD), 45 minutes away by car — flat road, no traffic worth mentioning.

Vietnam Airlines flies non-stop from Frankfurt to Vietnam daily; the continuation to Đà Nẵng is normally via a connection in Hanoi, with total flying time of about twelve hours plus the connection. The straight-line distance Frankfurt to Đà Nẵng is roughly 9,300 kilometres. From Munich and via Singapore, Bangkok or Doha there are numerous alternatives, often cheaper and rarely much longer.

A practical note for families: the airport transfer is the point at which a long journey either ends properly or takes another hour. Have it booked in advance rather than negotiating at a taxi rank after twelve hours in the air with luggage and tired children.

Easter (Good Friday 26 March 2027). The best combination of the year: dry, mild enough to walk, and the Old Town is passable at midday rather than only early and late. The window from late February to mid-April is the quietest phase in the Vietnamese calendar.

Summer holidays, June and July. Dry and hot. In practice: Old Town early or in the evening, the middle of the day at the pool or the beach. For families with small children the heat is the real planning factor, not the rain.

Bavarian summer holidays, August to mid-September. The first three weeks are normal high summer. The final third sits at the edge of the rainy season — the probability of storms and sustained rain rises noticeably. If you are Bavarian and flexible, put the trip at the start of the holidays, not the end.

Autumn holidays. Honest recommendation: not Hội An. If the dates are fixed and it has to be Vietnam, the north — Hanoi, Ninh Bình, Sa Pa — is considerably more reliable in October than the central coast.

Where to stay — and why the riverbank is a different question in the rainy season

In the dry months, choosing between the Old Town and the riverbank is a question of quiet. In October and November it is a question of elevation. If you book in the rainy season you should know where the building stands — our flood map for Hội An shows which streets are regularly affected.

When are the German summer holidays in 2027? Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland start first on 28 June 2027. Bavaria is the last state to begin, on 2 August 2027, with holidays running to 13 September. The legal frame for German summer holidays always falls between 20 June and 15 September.
