Body Scrub in Hội An: Salt, Coffee or Mud — What Each Is, What It Costs, and When Not to Book One

Our spa menu has three body scrubs, all sixty minutes, all per person. Here is what each is made of, the exact price, the two days you should not book one, and the phrase on our own menu we can no longer stand behind.

Facts checked · next review

A body scrub is the least mysterious thing on a spa menu: something gritty, rubbed over the skin, then taken off again. That is why it is worth describing exactly. Our menu at Nghê Prana, the riverside hotel on the Thu Bồn, has three of them, each sixty minutes and priced per person. Below is what is in each bowl, what it costs, when a scrub is the wrong booking, and — because one line on our own menu promises more than we can show — what we do not claim.

The three scrubs and what each costs

Mineral mudMineral mud (bùn khoáng)60 min650,000₫

Prices were read from our live spa menu on 24 September 2026 — about US$21 and US$25 at the 26,000₫ rate we use across this site. They are final and include VAT; nothing is added at the desk. Hotel guests take 15% off spa treatments.

Sea salt with yogurt or milk: the gentlest of the three

The American Academy of Dermatology defines this kind of treatment plainly: "Mechanical exfoliation uses a tool, such as a brush, pad, or sponge, or a scrub to physically remove dead skin cells" (aad.org, updated 6 February 2026). Salt is the scrub. Yogurt or fresh milk turns it into a paste that slides rather than scratches, and salt crystals soften and dissolve in the wet paste as the therapist works, so the grit gets finer as the hour goes on. Our menu calls it "exfoliation without the sting". It is the cheapest of the three and the one to choose for a first scrub.

Coffee grounds and green tea: the one made of what Vietnam grows

Vietnam is "the world's largest producer of robusta coffee, accounting for over 40% of global robusta output" (World Coffee Research, country page read 24 September 2026). This scrub uses Vietnamese robusta grounds with green tea powder. Coffee grounds do not dissolve the way salt does, so this is the firmest grit on the menu, and it smells like breakfast. If you want the story of the bean itself, it is in our piece on why Vietnamese coffee tastes the way it does. We make no claim about caffeine doing anything to cellulite or circulation; the scrub is abrasion and scent, and that is what you are paying for.

Mineral mud, and what "Nha Trang mud" does and does not mean

Our standalone item is listed as mineral mud (bùn khoáng); in Package 1 the same step is written as "body scrub with Nha Trang mud and steamed salt". Nha Trang's mud-bathing trade starts at Tháp Bà, where a hot saline spring was found in 1994 by technical drilling by the Central Vietnam Federation of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology; the Tháp Bà hot-spring centre was built from September 1999 and opened to guests on 29 January 2000 (Vietnamese Wikipedia, Suối khoáng Tháp Bà, read 24 September 2026). Nha Trang now has several mud operators and suppliers. We have not published which one our mud comes from, so we do not claim it is Tháp Bà mud, and we will add the supplier to this page when we do.

There is a real medical literature on mud — for a different job. A 2018 systematic review in BioMed Research International (Fraioli and colleagues) examined 35 studies and included 12 comparative trials of mud packs, mud baths and balneotherapy for knee osteoarthritis, and concluded they reduced pain and painkiller use. That is mud applied to joints across a course of spa therapy, for arthritis. Ours is a sixty-minute cosmetic scrub. Same material family, different job, and we do not borrow that evidence. For the same reason we cannot support a phrase on our own menu, that the mud "draws out impurities": we have no measurement behind it. What the mud scrub does, verifiably, is leave the skin smooth.

When not to book a scrub

Ruth Werner calls it the one cardinal rule for skin and massage: if the skin is not intact, the client is "a walking invitation to infection" — "open skin, broken skin, scabbed skin, oozing skin" is a red flag (A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology, 5th ed., p. 20). A scrub is abrasion by design, so that rule is stricter here than for a massage. The AAD's version is shorter: "Never exfoliate if you have open cuts or wounds or if your skin is sunburned." Werner classes sunburn as a first-degree burn (p. 52) and writes that most burns contraindicate massage while acute, the only exception being very mild sunburn that would benefit from soothing lotion (pp. 52–53). A scrub is not lotion. If you are pink from An Bàng, book the relaxing oil massage instead, or wait until the redness and tenderness have gone. Package 4 on our menu includes an aloe vera sunburn treatment.

The AAD gives three more reasons to go gently or skip it: prescription retinoid creams and products containing retinol or benzoyl peroxide can already make skin "more sensitive or peel"; for dry, sensitive or acne-prone skin "mechanical exfoliation may be too irritating"; and it advises avoiding strong mechanical exfoliation "if you have a darker skin tone or notice dark spots on your skin after burns, bug bites or acne breakouts". If any of that is you, say so on the consultation form. The therapist can keep the pressure light and choose the salt scrub over the coffee, or we will suggest a massage instead.

Hands dusted with fine salt scrub over a ceramic mixing bowl
Salt softens in the wet paste as it is worked, so the grit gets finer through the hour. The AAD: never exfoliate over open cuts or sunburned skin.

Scrubs inside our packages

Three packages include a full-body scrub. Package 1, Full Recovery — 1,350,000₫, 2 hours 45 minutes: relaxing full-body massage (60 min), facial scrub and massage with a mud mask (45 min), and body scrub with Nha Trang mud and steamed salt (60 min). Package 2, Full Body Cleanse — 1,500,000₫, 3 hours: relaxing massage (60 min), body scrub (60 min), facial scrub, mask and steamer (60 min). Both include a complimentary 20 minutes of xông hơi herbal steam for two. Nghê Special — 1,890,000₫, 4 hours: facial (60 min), foot reflexology (30 min), relaxing massage (60 min), body scrub and wrap (60 min), steam (30 min). Bought separately, a mud scrub and a 60-minute oil massage come to 1,100,000₫; Package 1 adds the 45-minute facial and the steam for 250,000₫ more.

For two, side by side

Scrubs are priced per person, so two people side by side pay double: 1,100,000₫ for two salt scrubs, 1,300,000₫ for two coffee or two mud scrubs, and you can each choose a different one. Add 20 minutes of herbal steam for two at 250,000₫ each and two salt scrubs with steam come to 1,600,000₫. Our couple spa page has the private room, the jacuzzi and how to book both of you in.

What happens in the hour

You are in a private room. Underwear stays on for the entire treatment; you are covered by a towel throughout, only the area being worked on is uncovered, and it is covered again before the therapist moves on. Nghê Prana is a licensed hotel spa and every treatment is therapeutic. Three things we have not yet printed, and have asked the spa team to confirm before we do: the exact order of the hour, how the scrub is taken off (shower or warm towels), and whether a moisturiser follows. We would rather leave them out than guess. If you book online, the consultation form asks about your skin and has a body map where you tap once for focus here and twice for avoid here — that is where the sunburn, the graze from a bicycle or the retinol cream goes.

What we do not claim

We do not claim any scrub detoxifies, draws out toxins or impurities, reduces cellulite, slims, firms or tightens. We do not claim our mud is therapeutic mud or comes from Tháp Bà. We do not claim caffeine or green tea does anything through the skin in sixty minutes. We have not measured outcomes on our own guests. A scrub removes dead skin cells from the surface and leaves skin feeling smooth; that is the whole promise, and it is one we can keep.

The short version

Three scrubs, sixty minutes each, per person: sea salt with yogurt or milk 550,000₫, coffee and green tea 650,000₫, mineral mud 650,000₫. Skip all three on sunburned or broken skin. Choose salt for a first scrub, coffee for the firmest grit, mud for the smoothest finish. Book at reception or through our spa page.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a body scrub in Hoi An at Nghe Prana?

Three body scrubs, each 60 minutes and priced per person: sea salt with yogurt or milk 550,000₫, coffee grounds and green tea 650,000₫, mineral mud 650,000₫ — about US$21 and US$25 at the 26,000₫ rate used across this site. Prices read from our live spa menu on 24 September 2026; final and VAT-inclusive, nothing added at the desk. Two people side by side pay per person: 1,100,000₫ for two salt scrubs, 1,300,000₫ for two coffee or two mud scrubs. Hotel guests receive 15% off spa treatments.

Can I get a body scrub if I am sunburned?

No. The American Academy of Dermatology says: "Never exfoliate if you have open cuts or wounds or if your skin is sunburned." Ruth Werner classes sunburn as a first-degree burn and writes that burns contraindicate massage while acute, the only exception being very mild sunburn that would benefit from a soothing lotion (A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology, 5th ed., pp. 52–53) — and a scrub is abrasion, not lotion. Book the relaxing oil massage instead, or wait until the redness and tenderness have gone. The same applies to broken, scabbed or grazed skin (Werner p. 20).

Is the mud scrub the same as a Nha Trang mud bath?

No. Our standalone item is listed as mineral mud; Package 1 names Nha Trang mud. Nha Trang's mud-bathing trade began at Tháp Bà, where a hot saline spring was found by drilling in 1994 and the centre opened on 29 January 2000, but Nha Trang now has several mud suppliers and we have not published which one ours comes from, so we do not claim Tháp Bà. The medical evidence on mud (Fraioli et al., BioMed Research International 2018: 12 comparative trials) is for mud packs and baths on arthritic knees over a course of treatment, not for a 60-minute cosmetic scrub, and we do not borrow it. We also cannot support the phrase "draws out impurities" on our own menu; what the scrub verifiably does is leave skin smooth.

Does a coffee scrub reduce cellulite?

We do not claim it does. Our coffee and green tea scrub uses Vietnamese robusta grounds — Vietnam grows over 40% of the world's robusta, per World Coffee Research — and it is the firmest grit of our three scrubs because coffee grounds do not dissolve the way salt does. What you are paying for is abrasion and scent: dead skin removed from the surface and skin left smooth. We make no claim about caffeine, detox, slimming, firming or circulation, and we have not measured outcomes on our own guests.
