How Long Do Gel Nails Last? What the Makers Promise and What Was Actually Measured
Gel nails last about two to three weeks on the hands, and likely longer on the toes. That figure comes from the makers and from a hospital's advice page; the one independent measurement we found is a London study of gel with no nail preparation at all. Here is what each maker promises, what that study saw, how far your nail grows in that time, why gel lifts early, what may make it last, and how to take it off at home without hurting the nail.
How long do gel nails last? About two to three weeks on the hands, and likely longer on the toes. The hand figure is what the makers and the Cleveland Clinic say, but we could not find a published test behind any brand's figure. The nearest thing to an independent measurement is a London pharmacy school study, in which more than half of a lab-made gel film was still on the nail at day 14, with no filing or primer. What ends a gel set is usually your own nail growing out, or water and knocks at the edges, and how it comes off matters more to the nail than how long it stayed on. We are Nghê Prana, a riverside hotel and spa on the Thu Bồn at Cẩm Nam in Hội An, and we paint gel, so this page sets out what is known, what is only trade advice, and what we have not checked about our own.

These are from OPI's gel and lacquer pages, CND's application guide, The GelBottle, Mylee and the Cleveland Clinic. So the honest range is two to three weeks, and note the words: "up to" is a ceiling, not an average. Mylee says answers of a few days or a month are both wrong. We take that as the trade's view; none of these pages shows how its figure was tested. If you need a number to plan a trip around, we would count on two weeks and treat the third as a bonus.
What was actually measured
The nearest thing we found to a test is a PhD thesis by Laxmi Kerai at the UCL School of Pharmacy, published in part in 2016. The team wanted to know whether gel could carry antifungal medicine, so they had to know how long it stays on. Twelve women aged 18 to 65 took part. Each gel was tested on all ten fingernails of at least six of them, in a single coat cured for two minutes under a UVA lamp, and the nails were checked daily for up to 28 days. By day 14, more than half of the film from the medicated gel was still on the nail. It stayed significantly longer than a pharmacy nail lacquer did.
Two details matter more than the number. The results varied widely between people, and the author puts that down to "hand washing, dish washing, swimming etc". And this gel had been given a hard test: one coat of a lab formula, on nails that were not filed or primed. The thesis says that is why it fell short of the "up to 3 weeks" reported in the trade literature for cosmetic gels, which go onto a lightly filed, alcohol-wiped, primed nail. Our reading: the first fortnight comes fairly easily, and preparation is what buys the third week. That is an inference, because nobody ran the same test on a salon manicure.
Why the limit is about three weeks: your nail grows
Gel does not have to fail to look finished. It sits on a nail that is moving. In a study of 22 young American adults, fingernails grew 3.47 mm a month and toenails 1.62 mm. Here is what that means for the bare band at the base of the nail, by our own arithmetic: the monthly rate divided by 30.4 days gives the growth per day, multiplied by the days since the manicure.

Those are averages from a small group who measured themselves. A study of 50 Indian adults found 0.103 mm a day, a little slower, or about 2.2 mm in three weeks. William Bean, who tracked his own thumbnail for 35 years, went from 0.123 mm a day at 32 to 0.095 mm at 67, so the same gap takes longer to show as you get older. In the American study the little fingernail was the slowest on the hand and the big toenail the fastest on the foot, so one nail can look due before the others.
Why gel lifts or peels early
If gel lifts within days, it is rarely the calendar. Nails take up water. The thesis notes that "nail plates rapidly absorb water", and Farran and colleagues found that nail clippings resisted tearing best at 55 percent humidity and that nails "are brittle when fully dry and fracture and split when wet". So a nail that keeps wetting and drying under a rigid coat is a plausible cause of lifting, although nobody we found has tested that directly. The trade's own list is below; it is experience, not research.

How to make gel nails last longer
None of this has been tested in a trial that we could find. It is what the makers and doctors advise, and we have marked who says what.
Ask for thin coats, tip included.CND's guide calls for thin layers and coats the edge of the nail as well as the surface.
Start with a clean, dry nail. CND cleans and "temporarily" dehydrates the nail first, and says skipping the wet cuticle step can "increase adhesion for some clients". Trade prep often trims the cuticle too; the AAD says never to let anyone push or cut it, and you can refuse.
Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.Mylee says so, and it fits what the London team saw.
Oil your cuticles daily. The Cleveland Clinic, CND and Mylee all advise it. The hospital's reason is a stronger nail; Mylee's and The GelBottle's is less lifting.
Do not use your nails as tools. The GelBottle blames pressure at the free edge for wear.
Daily cuticle oil is advised by a hospital and by the makers alike. No trial has tested it on gel wear.
How long does gel last on toes?
Probably longer, for two reasons. Toenails grow at about half the speed, so by the arithmetic above a toenail takes about 45 days to show the gap a fingernail shows at 21. Kerai also notes that films stay on feet longer because they meet less abrasion and washing. We found no published figure for gel on toes, so that is a sum, not a measurement. Our pedicure page covers taking it off and how often to go.
When should gel come off?
No source we found sets a maximum. The advice is about what happens next: when colour starts to come away, the AAD says not to pick at it but to have it removed. The nearest thing to a hygiene study is Hewlett and colleagues, who painted the nails of 88 health care workers and cultured them on days 1, 7 and 14. Bacteria rose over time on gel, ordinary polish and bare nails alike. Gel did not carry more, but alcohol hand gel reduced bacteria on the other two and not on gel. That matters in a hospital more than on a beach. On breaks between sets, the AAD says one to two weeks or longer, and the gel safety page sets out the damage and allergy evidence.

The AAD's first answer is a manicurist, and there is a reason. In the Polish survey of 2,118 women on our gel page, nail changes after removal were reported by 18.13 percent of those whose gel was put on by a professional and 55.95 percent of those who did it themselves. If you are doing it yourself anyway, this is the Cleveland Clinic's method, with the AAD's cautions:
Do not peel it. The Cleveland Clinic calls that one of the worst things you can do to a nail.
Dull the shiny top coat with an emery board. Only the surface: Vinmec says filing first shortens the soak.
Soak cotton in acetone and put it on the nail, not the skin. Skip this if you are allergic to acetone. It is flammable, so keep it away from flames, and open a window.
Wrap each fingertip in foil. This holds the cotton in place and stops the acetone evaporating.
Wait 10 to 15 minutes. The gel should then come away easily.
Ease off what is left with an orange stick or plastic pusher, not a metal tool.
Moisturise. The AAD suggests petroleum jelly on nails and cuticles several times a day.
Sources differ on the wait, and the reason is the product. The AAD says about 15 minutes, as do Wang and Lipner (10 to 15); CND gives 5 to 15 minutes depending on the top coat; a 2025 dermatology review says salons often dip hands for 30 minutes and suggests a cotton ball for 10 instead, to spare the skin. If gel is still stuck, wrap it again rather than scrape. Do not file the gel off: a 2026 review, citing Batory and colleagues, calls removal by drill or nail file the most destructive method. Vinmec adds that nails are thin and easily broken afterwards, and should rest for a few weeks.
Gel, Shellac and gel extensions: which is which
Words get mixed up here. Gel polish is a colour coat cured under a lamp and soaked off. Shellac is a brand of it, made by CND, so "gel vs Shellac" is mostly one maker's system against the rest: CND's name promises 14-plus days and OPI's page three weeks. Gel extensions lengthen the nail. Mylee rates its own for up to three weeks too, and says that beyond that the thickest point moves forward and puts more pressure on the tip. Acrylic is a separate liquid-and-powder system, and we found no reliable wear figure for it. Of these three, we do gel polish only: no extensions, no acrylic.
Gel on a holiday: when to book it
A trip of a week or less: regular polish should see you through, and comes off with ordinary remover.
Two weeks or more: gel suits, and it is best early in the trip if you want it to last the whole way.
The last days of the trip: you carry a fresh set home, but you then need a salon or acetone there, because ordinary remover will not shift it.
Sea and pool: we found no test of gel in sea water, chlorine or tropical humidity. The London team only names swimming as one reason results varied.

Removal is not a line on our menu, so ask reception before you come. One thing against our own menu: the Luxury Gel begins with a soak, and CND's guide says a dry start can help adhesion for some clients, so if lasting matters most to you, tell the therapist. We do not know whether that soak shortens wear. The nails page has the whole menu.
What nobody has measured
We found no independent test of how long any salon gel lasts, no study of gel in the sea or the tropics, no trial of cuticle oil or gloves on gel wear, and no measured figure for gel on toes. The London study used a lab formula, not a cosmetic gel, and few volunteers. The growth rates come from small groups. And we have not yet published the brand of our gel or our lamp, and we have no timed record of how long our own sets last; we have asked, and will add what we learn. We are a hotel spa, not a dermatologist: with a nail that is lifting away from the skin, discoloured or painful, see one first.

About two to three weeks on the hands. OPI claims 3 weeks of wear, CND calls Shellac a 14+ day colour, The GelBottle expects wear and tear from around two weeks, and the Cleveland Clinic says two to three weeks. None publishes a test. For planning a trip, count on two weeks and treat the third as a bonus. Regular polish is rated up to 7 days.
Has anyone measured how long gel stays on a nail?
The nearest study we found is a UCL School of Pharmacy PhD thesis (Kerai 2016): 12 women, a single coat of a lab-made gel with no filing or primer, checked daily for up to 28 days. More than half of the medicated film was still on at day 14, with wide variation between people. Cosmetic gel goes onto a filed, primed nail, which the thesis gives as the reason for its longer wear. Nobody has run the same test on a salon manicure.
How much does a nail grow under gel in three weeks?
About 2.4 mm on a fingernail and 1.1 mm on a toenail, by our arithmetic from Yaemsiri 2010 (22 young adults: 3.47 mm a month for fingernails, 1.62 mm for toenails). A study of 50 Indian adults found 0.103 mm a day, about 2.2 mm in three weeks (Babu 2024). Nails grow more slowly with age (Bean 1980).
Why do my gel nails lift after a few days?
The trade blames oil or dust left on the nail, coats too thick to cure, gel too close to the cuticle, and knocks at the tip (The GelBottle). Water is a plausible cause too: nail plates absorb it rapidly (Kerai 2016) and nails split when wet (Farran 2008), though nobody has tested this directly. Results in the London study varied with hand washing, dish washing and swimming.
How do you remove gel polish at home?
Do not peel it. Dull the shiny top coat with an emery board, put acetone-soaked cotton on the nail rather than the skin, wrap each fingertip in foil, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then ease off what is left with an orange stick or plastic pusher (Cleveland Clinic; AAD). Do not file the gel off: a drill or nail file caused the greatest damage to the nail plate (Batory 2019). Acetone is flammable, so keep it from flames and open a window. Moisturise afterwards.
How long does gel last on toes?
Probably longer than on hands, but we found no published figure. Toenails grow at about half the speed, so a toenail takes about 45 days to show the gap a fingernail shows at 21, by our arithmetic. Films also stay on feet longer because feet meet less abrasion and washing (Kerai 2016).
