How Long Does a Pedicure Take, and How Often Should You Get One?
A plain pedicure takes about half an hour to 45 minutes, a gel pedicure up to an hour and a spa pedicure an hour or more; those figures come from the salon trade, because no medical body publishes them. How often is slower than for hands: toenails grow at under half the speed of fingernails, so a pedicure every four to six weeks is the salon habit and one per holiday is plenty. Here are the numbers, what a safe pedicure leaves alone, and our menu in Hội An.
How long does a pedicure take? About 30 to 45 minutes for a plain one with ordinary polish, 45 minutes to an hour with gel, and an hour to an hour and a half for a spa pedicure with a soak, a scrub and a massage. Those are salon-trade figures, from a US booking marketplace and a nail technician; no medical or podiatry body we found publishes durations or a recommended frequency. How often is a slower question for feet than for hands, because toenails grow at under half the speed of fingernails: the salon habit is every four to six weeks, and in our view one is plenty on a holiday. We are Nghê Prana, a riverside hotel and spa on the Thu Bồn at Cẩm Nam in Hội An, and our nail table sits inside the spa; this page gives the numbers, the parts of a pedicure the doctors would rather you skipped, and our own menu.

The times are the average ranges across salon listings on Booksy, a US booking marketplace; its own FAQ gives a slightly different figure for spa pedicures, 45 to 75 minutes, which shows how loose these numbers are. The gel figures come from Booksy and from Molly Romah, a New York nail technician interviewed by Refinery29. OPI's "up to 7 days of wear" for its ordinary lacquer is a manufacturer's claim and is not specific to toes. Treat every figure in the table as a salon's estimate, not a measurement.
How long a pedicure takes at our spa
Our menu prints the time for only one pedicure, the Luxury Gel: a herbal foot soak of 10 minutes, a scrub of 20 and a scraping massage of 20, then the gel, so fifty minutes of foot work before the colour goes on. The O.P.I and gel pedicures are listed as "cut + polish" and "cut + gel polish" without a time, and we would rather say that than invent one: ask when you book and reception will tell you how long to allow on the day. Hands and feet together take longer than either alone. If what you want is time on your feet rather than colour, the special foot treatment on our foot massage page is 90 minutes of soak, trim, heel scrape and moisturiser, and the nails page has the whole nail menu.
How often should you get a pedicure
The answer starts with how slowly toenails grow. Yaemsiri and colleagues measured the nails of 22 healthy young American adults and found fingernails grew 3.47 mm a month and toenails 1.62 mm, with the big toe the fastest of the toes. A dermatologists' and podiatrists' consensus led by Lipner notes that a whole toenail takes 12 to 18 months to grow out, and nails grow more slowly with age: Orentreich and colleagues found growth "decreases 50% over the life spans" of people and dogs. So four weeks after a pedicure the bare strip at the base of a big toenail is only one or two millimetres, which is why polish on toes looks fresh for longer than on fingers.

None of these is a study. The salon figures are habits, the Vinmec page cites nothing, and the doctors' bodies say only how to have a pedicure safely, not how often. Our reading, for a stay in Hội An: one pedicure is enough for a week or two, gel if you want the colour to survive sea water and sandals for the whole trip, and ordinary polish if you would rather take it off yourself at home. If you have gel on your toes already, the American Academy of Dermatology's advice to leave nails bare for one to two weeks between sets is written for hands but is a sensible rule for feet too.
Toenails grow at under half the speed of fingernails, so a pedicure stays tidy for weeks.
What a good pedicure leaves alone
Cuticles. The AAD: "never cut or forcefully push back your cuticles". The APMA, America's podiatrists, allows gentle pushing; Dr Phan Vũ Lam Phương in VnExpress says "cần tránh cắt hoặc đẩy lớp biểu bì ra sau", avoid cutting or pushing the cuticle back. Every source agrees on not cutting.
The corners of the toenail. Cut straight across and not too short (APMA). Tâm Anh hospital reported a 26-year-old with a severe ingrown toenail after routine corner-trimming at a salon, and its doctor advises not cutting toenails too short or digging deep into the corners; Vinmec reports cases of necrosis after an infected corner-trim.
Calluses with a blade. The APMA says no foot razor, and a podiatrist quoted by the Cleveland Clinic warns against "cheese-grater-like tools".
Your razor. Do not shave your legs for at least 24 hours before a pedicure (AAD).
The shaving rule has a study behind it. In 2000 a nail salon in northern California gave 110 customers boils on their legs; Winthrop and colleagues found mycobacteria in all ten of its whirlpool footbaths, and shaving the legs before the pedicure was a risk factor: 70 percent of patients had done it against 31 percent of customers who were not infected, an adjusted odds ratio of 4.8. When Vugia and colleagues swabbed 30 whirlpool footbaths in 18 Californian salons, 29 grew mycobacteria. Both studies were of recirculating whirlpool tubs. The APMA's advice is to book early in the day, when foot baths are "typically cleanest", and the Cleveland Clinic's podiatrist says they should be cleaned and disinfected after each client.
Pedicures with diabetes
The APMA advises anyone with diabetes or poor circulation to see a podiatrist, who can recommend a pedicure to suit. An endocrinologist at Scripps Health is more permissive: "Many people with diabetes can safely get pedicures", unless there is an open sore, severe nerve damage in the feet or a history of foot ulcers. Diabetes Canada's foot-care sheet says "Don't soak your feet, as this can dry your skin", which matters here, because our Luxury Gel begins with a ten-minute soak and our special foot treatment includes one. With diabetes, see a podiatrist first, as the APMA advises; if you then book with us, the plain O.P.I or gel pedicure is a cut and polish with no soak, and tell us about the diabetes when you book.

Gel on toes: removal and allergies
Gel comes off by soaking in acetone, not by peeling; Refinery29's technician says to soak gel on toes for at least ten minutes, and a gel set that is picked off takes the top layer of the nail with it, as our nails page explains. Allergy is the other gel question. Vinmec's page on gel allergy, with the clinical immunologist Phạm Thị Hải Yến as adviser, recommends gel "không chứa HEMA và acrylate", free of HEMA and acrylates, to prevent it. We have not checked whether our gel is HEMA-free, so if you have reacted to gel before, choose O.P.I polish instead.

Ask what the scraping step uses before you book the Luxury Gel or the special foot treatment, and leave it out if you would rather. Nail design is priced on request, and a pedicure pairs with the rest of the menu on the spa packages page.
What nobody has measured
No trial has compared pedicure frequencies, and no medical body publishes how long a pedicure should take or how long polish lasts on toes; every duration and frequency on this page is from the salon trade or our own menu. The nail-growth study had 22 young adults, so older guests' toenails will grow more slowly than its figures. The infection studies are of Californian salons with whirlpool footbaths, more than twenty years old. And the Vinmec frequency page cites no source at all. We are a hotel spa, not a podiatrist: with diabetes, poor circulation or a painful toenail, see one first.

About 30 to 45 minutes for a plain pedicure with ordinary polish, 45 to 60 minutes with gel, and 60 to 90 minutes for a spa pedicure with a soak, scrub and massage. These are salon-trade averages (Booksy); no medical body publishes durations. Our Luxury Gel has 50 minutes of soak, scrub and massage before the gel.
How often should you get a pedicure?
No medical or podiatry body gives a frequency. Salons suggest every four to six weeks; toenails grow about 1.62 mm a month, under half the rate of fingernails (Yaemsiri et al., 2010), so a pedicure stays tidy for weeks. On a holiday of a week or two, one is enough in our view.
How long does a gel pedicure last?
About three to four weeks, according to salon sources, which also say gel lasts a week or two longer on toes than on fingers. It should be soaked off in acetone, not peeled.
Should you shave your legs before a pedicure?
No. The American Academy of Dermatology says not to shave your lower legs for at least 24 hours before a pedicure. In a 2000 outbreak at a Californian nail salon, shaving before the pedicure was a risk factor for leg boils caused by mycobacteria in whirlpool footbaths (Winthrop et al., NEJM, 2002).
Should the cuticles be cut during a pedicure?
No. The American Academy of Dermatology says never cut or forcefully push back your cuticles, and Vietnamese doctors warn against cutting toenails too short or digging into the corners, which can cause ingrown nails. Ask for your cuticles to be left alone.
How much is a pedicure at Nghe Prana in Hoi An?
An O.P.I pedicure is 300,000₫, a gel pedicure 450,000₫, hands and feet together 550,000₫ in O.P.I or 850,000₫ in gel, and the Luxury Gel with soak, scrub and scraping massage 950,000₫ (menu read 21 October 2026); about US$12, US$17 and US$37 at 26,000₫ to the dollar.
