Hot Stone Massage in Hội An: The Price, the Heat, and Who Should Skip It

The first page of this query is spa lists. This one answers the question that was asked: what the treatment is, how hot the stones actually get, who should not book one, and what ours costs — 520,000₫ for 60 minutes.

Search `hot stone massage hoi an` and almost everything on the first page is a list of spas. The query names one treatment, and the results answer a different question: which spa. This page answers the one that was asked — what a hot stone massage is, how hot the stones actually get, who should not book one, and exactly what ours costs.

What a hot stone massage actually is

Smooth stones are heated, laid along the body — usually either side of the spine, sometimes in the palms or between the toes — and then used by the therapist as an extension of the hands, gliding over muscle instead of resting on it. The stone is normally basalt, a volcanic rock chosen because it is dense enough to hold heat for the length of a treatment and can be polished smooth enough not to drag on skin. Sức khỏe & Đời sống, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health's newspaper, describes the effect plainly: heat relaxes the vessels, circulation rises, and muscle that will not release under hands alone tends to let go (ThS. Nguyễn Mai Hương, 18 July 2019).

Stones are laid along the body first, then worked. The heat does the opening; the hands do the rest.

How hot is hot? Two published numbers, and why they differ

The American Massage Therapy Association publishes a figure for the water the stones are heated in: 110 to 130°F, which is 43 to 54°C (Mary Nelson, Massage Therapy Journal, 1 September 2010). The same article gives the working test therapists use — if you cannot hold the stone comfortably in your own hand, it does not go on a guest — and the rule that a sheet, towel or clothing goes between bare skin and a resting stone.

Vietnamese wellness writing usually quotes 50 to 60°C for the stone itself, which sits just above the top of that range and is a reasonable description of the same practice from the other end. A third figure circulates on Vietnamese massage-equipment retail sites — heat the stones to 130 to 145 degrees, then let them cool. Read that as Fahrenheit and it lands at 54 to 63°C and makes sense; read it as Celsius, as those pages print it, and it would blister skin on contact. We think it is a unit that lost its label on the way through translation, and we mention it because it is the kind of number a search engine will happily hand you without the caveat.

What we do not publish is a measured temperature of our own. We have not put a thermometer in the heater and written the reading down, so we are not going to quote one. What we can give you is the method instead: our therapists use the hand test above, the stones are worked rather than parked, and if the heat is wrong for you the correct thing to do is say so mid-treatment. It gets adjusted. Nobody minds.

Who should not book one

Heat is the active ingredient, which means the treatment is not for everyone. Sức khỏe & Đời sống lists four warnings: broken or damaged skin, including bruises, cuts, burns and varicose veins, until they heal; any fever, chills or flu; heart disease, because of the circulatory load; and diabetes, because nerve damage can stop you feeling a burn or too much pressure before it does harm. The American Massage Therapy Association's list is longer and adds cancer, autoimmune conditions, epilepsy, neuropathy, chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, and recent surgery. If any of those describe you, a doctor's opinion first, and one of our unheated treatments after.

Pregnancy is on both lists. Most therapists will not give a hot stone massage to a pregnant guest, and we would rather say that here than at the door. We have a pregnancy full-body treatment on the menu instead — 520,000₫ for 60 minutes, 700,000₫ for 90 — and it is a genuinely different treatment, not the hot stone with the stones left out. Ask your doctor, then book that one.

What it costs

Read from our live spa menu on 6 September 2026. Prices are per person, in Vietnamese đồng. At our published rate of 26,000₫ to the US dollar, the 60-minute hot stone is about $20 and the 90-minute about $27.

Our menu calls it the Himalaya hot stone full-body massage, and that is the name, not a provenance claim. We have not audited where the stones were quarried and we are not going to tell you they came off a particular mountain. What we will tell you is that the treatment is the standard heated-stone protocol described above, run for 60 or 90 minutes. The hot stone also appears inside Package 3, our best-value package: foot massage for 45 minutes followed by a 60-minute hot stone or herbal massage, 820,000₫ for one hour 45.

Sixty minutes or ninety

Sixty is a full pass over the body with the stones — back, legs, arms, shoulders — and it is enough. Ninety does not add territory, it adds time on the back and shoulders, which is where three days of walking the Old Town in the heat ends up. If you have been on a motorbike or a bus that week, take the ninety.

Hot stone or Vietnamese herbal — how to choose

They cost the same, 520,000₫ and 700,000₫, and they use heat differently. Hot stone puts the heat into stone and glides it over the muscle: broad, even, deep, and quiet. The Vietnamese herbal massage puts it into a compress of lemongrass, ginger and local herbs pressed into the muscle, so it is warm in a smaller, more aromatic, more Vietnamese way. Choose hot stone for a stiff back. Choose herbal if you want the thing you cannot get at home. If you cannot decide, the treatment comparison on our couple spa page sets all nine side by side with prices.

Booking it for two

Hot stone is one of the treatments we run side by side in the private couple's room — two therapists, two beds, one closed door. The massage itself is priced per person, so two hot stones cost twice one. Two things on the menu are genuinely priced for two, and both pair well with a stone massage: the jacuzzi and the xông hơi herbal steam, which get cheaper per head from two people up.

Two afternoons, costed. Steam then stones: 20 minutes of xông hơi at 250,000₫ each, then a 60-minute hot stone at 520,000₫ each — 500,000₫ plus 1,040,000₫, so 1,540,000₫ for two, about $59. The long version: 45 minutes in the jacuzzi at 400,000₫ each, then 90 minutes of hot stone at 700,000₫ each — 800,000₫ plus 1,400,000₫, so 2,200,000₫ for two, about $85. The jacuzzi needs one day's notice; the steam does not. Everything else about booking as a couple is on the couple spa page.

What actually happens in the room

Underwear stays on for the entire treatment. You are covered by a towel throughout, and only the part being worked is uncovered, then covered again before the therapist moves on — chest and groin stay covered the whole time. A towel or sheet goes between your skin and any stone left resting. Nghê Prana is a licensed hotel spa and every treatment on the menu is therapeutic: there are no sexual services of any kind, none will be offered, and nothing will be implied. We say it plainly because people arriving in a town they do not know deserve to know before they walk in, not after.
