Best Time to Get a Massage: Morning or Evening, Which Day of Your Trip, and When Hội An Is Hottest

There is no best hour on the clock: the only trial that compared morning and evening massage found the same effect at both. What does have evidence is an evening massage and sleep, soreness after firm work, and Hội An's heat, which peaks between 11:00 and 13:00 in every month. With our own booking times and what to book on which day of a trip.

Is there a best time to get a massage? Not on the clock: the only trial we found that compared the same massage in the morning and in the evening found the same effect at both. Three things do have evidence behind them. An evening massage shortly before bed improved sleep efficiency in one small study. Firm work can leave you sore for a day or two, so it belongs early in a trip, not on the morning you fly. And in Hội An the heat peaks between 11:00 and 13:00 in every month of the year, which makes the middle of the day the best hour to spend lying still indoors, and the hour our own guests ask for least. We are Nghê Prana, a riverside hotel and spa on the Thu Bồn in Hội An. This page sets out the sources with page numbers, five years of hourly heat data, the start times our guests actually request, and what to book on which day of a trip.

Morning or evening: what has been measured

The only trial we found that compared the same massage in the morning and in the evening is small and not about relaxation. Bayrakdaroğlu and colleagues (Healthcare, 2024, vol. 12, article 165) gave twelve taekwondo athletes either no massage or a Swedish massage of 5, 10 or 15 minutes, in the morning (08:00–12:00) and in the evening (16:00–20:00), and then tested their balance. The 10- and 15-minute massages improved dynamic balance, and the improvement was, in the authors' words, "independent of the time of day". That is twelve athletes and a balance test, not holidaymakers and how relaxed they felt, so it does not prove there is no best time. It is simply the only direct comparison there is, and it found none.

None of the eight massage books we work from names a best time of day. What they do have an opinion on is the hour after. Simon Piers Gall closes the step-by-step sequence in The Art of Thai Foot Massage (2008) with "It is important to give your partner time to relax after a massage": sitting up slowly, then herbal tea or water. Susan Mumford, in The Massage Bible (2009), writes that you "may feel really tired" and that "the best option is to rest quietly for about an hour afterwards" (p. 386). The rule they add up to is that the clock matters less than what comes straight after. A massage at 16:00 followed by a 17:00 cooking class is a worse booking than the same massage with nothing after it.

The case for the evening: sleep

The best evidence for any particular hour is about sleep. In Ntoumas and colleagues' 2025 study (Healthcare, vol. 13, article 180), twenty adults with symptoms of insomnia were measured at home on three nights a week apart: once with no massage, once after a 45-minute relaxation massage just before bed, and once after a 45-minute sham massage. A portable sleep monitor recorded the night. Sleep efficiency, the share of time in bed actually spent asleep, was 89.9% after the real massage, against 81.1% after the sham and 84.5% with none, a statistically significant difference. Total sleep time was longer too, 6.3 hours against 5.8 and 5.7, but that difference was not significant.

An older study points the same way and is weaker than it looks. Richards (1998) gave 69 older men in a critical care unit a six-minute back massage, a relaxation tape or usual care at bedtime. The massage group slept more than an hour longer than the controls, but when the groups were re-analysed at equal size the difference was no longer significant (P = .06). Our reading of the two: an evening massage plausibly helps you sleep, it has not been shown to help everyone, and it costs nothing to try on a holiday where you have no alarm.

If sleep is the point, book the evening. Our menu describes the relaxing oil massage, 450,000₫ for 60 minutes, as "built for deep relaxation and better sleep". The spa is inside the hotel, so there is no ride home between the treatment room and bed. A 60-minute massage starting at 18:00 ends at 19:00, which leaves dinner after it; Mumford's sleeping advice is to "avoid caffeine or a heavy meal just before going to bed" (pp. 378–379). Expect to fall asleep on the table, which is normal: see falling asleep during a massage.

The case for midday: Hội An's heat, hour by hour

The second reason to choose an hour is local. Method: hourly air temperature and feels-like ("apparent") temperature from the Open-Meteo historical weather API, for 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025, 43,824 hours, at the model grid cell nearest the hotel (15.85°N, 108.36°E), in local time, averaged by month and hour. Queried on 10 October 2026. The feels-like figure combines air temperature with humidity, wind and sunshine.

Dec12:00 (24 °C)2526252525

The hottest hour falls between 11:00 and 13:00 in every month. From May to August the feels-like temperature averages 35 °C or more from 09:00 until at least 15:00, and in June until 19:00. Those are the hours to be off the street and lying still in a treatment room, and a massage at 12:00 or 13:00 turns the worst part of a summer day into the best. From October to February the whole day sits within about two degrees of noon, so in those months choose the hour by everything else on this page. These are averages from a weather model, not a thermometer on our terrace: a rainy October afternoon or a clear June evening will differ.

When our guests actually book

Our online booking form records the start time each guest asks for. Between 26 July and 25 September 2026 it received 33 requests (read from our bookings table on 10 October 2026; the form offers starts on the hour from 10:00 to 20:00, and bookings made at reception, by phone or by message are not in this count). Fourteen asked for a start between 15:00 and 17:59, and nine for 18:00 to 20:00. Six asked for 10:00 or 11:00. Three asked for 12:00 to 14:59, the hottest hours of the day, and one asked for the next free therapist. The single most requested time was 16:00, seven times.

So our guests already leave the spa for the end of the day, which suits sleep, and spend the hottest hours outside, which does not. Thirty-three requests from one channel over two summer months is a small sample and proves nothing about anyone else. We will not promise that a midday slot is always free. But a request for 12:00 or 13:00 is a request for the hour the fewest of our guests want.

Which day of your trip

  • The day you land. Werner lists "changing time zones through travel" among the causes of disrupted sleep (pp. 221–222), so a massage that afternoon will probably end in sleep. Choose something gentle, the oil massage or the foot massage, 450,000₫ each for 60 minutes, rather than your first firm treatment. Stiff legs after a long flight are normal; one calf that is painful, swollen, warm or red is not a spa question, and Werner's name for the risk is "coach class syndrome" (p. 245). See a doctor, and read our page on blood pressure, diabetes and varicose veins.
  • A day walking the Old Town. The foot massage is on the menu for exactly this, "an hour for the feet that carried you around Hội An". Late afternoon, before dinner.
  • Firm work. Thai, bamboo and the back, neck and shoulder treatment can leave you sore "for a day or two" (Werner p. 125; Davies p. 35), and Davies puts the outer edge at "up to two to three days" (p. 48). Book them early in the stay and not on the morning of a long flight. That last rule is our reading of the books, not theirs; see sore after a massage.
  • A beach day. Massage first. With sunburn the rule is to wait until it stops hurting, usually two to three days (Werner p. 52; our page on when to wait), so a burn on the second day of a short stay can rule out every oiled or heated treatment for the rest of it.
  • The day you fly. Something gentle, with an hour after it that has nothing in it, which is Mumford's advice for every massage (p. 386).

Food, drinks and the steam

Eat lightly and finish before you come: a full stomach is uncomfortable face down, and an empty one can leave you light-headed, because massage can lower blood sugar (Werner p. 404). Our restaurant serves lunch from 11:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 17:30 to 21:30, so a light lunch before a 14:00 massage works, and so does an 18:00 massage with dinner afterwards. Do not come straight from drinks: clients who are intoxicated "need to reschedule" (Werner p. 170). If you are adding the herbal steam, take it before the massage, not straight after; sauna before or after a massage has the reasons.

Booking a time

The spa is open from 9:00 to 21:00 every day and takes visitors as well as hotel guests. The online booking form offers starts on the hour from 10:00 to 20:00, and for the same day it needs at least an hour's notice. Please come five minutes before your time: if you start late we may have to shorten the treatment to keep the next guest on time, at the full price, and if you are running more than fifteen minutes late, tell reception and we will rebook you rather than rush it. Prices are per person and the same at every hour: the oil and foot massages are 450,000₫ for 60 minutes and 600,000₫ for 90, the back, neck and shoulder treatment 490,000₫ and 660,000₫, Thai and bamboo 570,000₫ and 770,000₫. A 90-minute treatment starting at 19:00 ends at 20:30. We have asked the spa team whether a 90-minute treatment can start at 20:00, which would run past 21:00; until we print their answer here, ask when you book. Not sure whether to book 60 or 90? See 60 or 90 minutes.

What nobody has measured

We found no study of the best time of day for a relaxation massage, in travellers or anyone else. The one morning-versus-evening comparison is twelve athletes and a balance test. The sleep result is twenty people, one night each, with the massage at home just before bed; a hotel guest walks back to a room first. The older sleep study was not significant on reanalysis. Our booking numbers are one channel and two summer months. The heat figures are a model of a grid cell. What we are confident of is narrower: the hour after a massage matters more than the hour on the clock, and in Hội An from May to September the hours to be out of the sun are late morning and early afternoon.

Coming as a couple? The couple spa in Hội An page has the private room for two, the jacuzzi and every price. For how many days in a row, read how often should you get a massage.
