Massage on Your Period: Is It OK, What Five Massage Books and Three Vietnamese Sources Say, and What to Ask For

Yes, with three small changes: no deep work on the belly, gentle work on the lower back and hips, and say if lying face down is uncomfortable. What Werner, Hoyme, Mumford, Lidell and Davies say, with page references, where Vietnamese advice disagrees, and when a spa is the wrong place to be.

It is one of the questions people search before a massage and rarely ask out loud: can I have a massage on my period? We are Nghê Prana, a riverside hotel and spa on the Thu Bồn in Hội An, and this page answers it from what is on our shelf and on our menu: the pathology textbook massage therapists learn from, four massage manuals, a patient page from Từ Dũ Hospital in Hồ Chí Minh City and two other Vietnamese sources, all read on 1 October 2026. The short answer is yes, with three small changes you can ask for. The longer one includes where the books and the Vietnamese advice disagree, and when a spa is the wrong place to be.

Can you get a massage on your period?

Yes. The textbook our other health pages rely on is Ruth Werner's A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology (5th ed.), and it treats a period as something to adapt to, not a reason to stop. For premenstrual syndrome, massage and bodywork "carry no specific risks" (p. 483). For painful periods with no underlying cause, which doctors call primary dysmenorrhea, massage "can be very helpful" by relieving stress and easing the muscle tightness that comes with the cycle (p. 449). The book asks for two things only. First: "Most women would probably also rather avoid deep abdominal work during their period" (p. 448). Second: "Deep or intrusive work for an undiagnosed problem that causes menstrual pain or during a menstrual period should be avoided" (p. 449). Deep is the word that matters. Gentle is fine; deep can wait a week.

The sources disagree on details and agree on the shape. Gentle, not deep. The lower back and hips, not the belly. And if the belly is worked at all, lightly and ideally in the days before the period, which is where Từ Dũ Hospital puts it and where Werner puts abdominal work, "when the client is not menstruating" (p. 449). Three books on our shelf have nothing to add: George Downing's The Massage Book (1972) does not mention periods; Simon Piers Gall's The Art of Thai Foot Massage (2008) gives three lists of contraindications and menstruation is on none of them; Carmen Renee Berry's Is Your Body Trying to Tell You Something? (1997) mentions periods only in passing. Davies's line is a self-treatment workbook's idea about the belly muscles, not something a spa massage treats; if cramps are bad enough that you are reading about trigger points, read the doctor section below first. If the ache is in your back and you suspect it starts somewhere else, our page on referred pain explains what to tell the therapist.

What to ask for on our table

A therapist's hands working gently either side of a guest's lower spine, a white towel over the hips
On a period day the work goes to the lower back and hips, gently, and not to the belly.

Our full-body massages are described on our menu pages as back, shoulders and neck, arms and hands, legs and feet; chest and groin stay covered throughout. On a period day three things are worth saying, and none of them needs explaining. No belly. Say "not the stomach, please", or tap the abdomen twice on the consultation form's body map, which marks it "avoid here". Gentle on the lower back. Slow circles and still pressure either side of the sacrum, the flat bone at the base of the spine, which is where Werner and Hoyme put the work; no pounding or chopping, which two of the three Vietnamese sources warn against by name. Say if lying face down is uncomfortable. Werner lists breast tenderness and bloating among premenstrual signs (p. 481), and both make the face-down half of a massage less pleasant; you can ask the therapist to skip that part, change the pressure or stop at any point.

Which treatment to book on your period

Treatment (60 min, per person)PriceOn a period day
Relaxing oil massage450,000₫The default: slow, medium pressure, easy to ask for lighter on the lower back
Vietnamese herbal massage520,000₫Warm compresses of lemongrass and ginger pressed into the back, not the belly. Warmth is the one remedy Werner (p. 449) and Từ Dũ Hospital both name
Himalaya hot stone massage520,000₫Warmth again; say if the heat feels like too much
Back, neck & shoulder490,000₫Unaffected; book it if the problem is a flight, not a cramp
Thai traditional · Bamboo570,000₫Firm by design; our menu calls the bamboo "firmer than hands". Better on another day if your back is tender
Foot massage · Foot reflexology450,000₫ · 520,000₫Vietnamese advice is not to have the soles worked hard during a period; the books do not share it. Your call
Facial450,000₫ (45 min)Untouched by any of this, if you would rather not be touched anywhere else today

Prices read from our live spa menu on 1 October 2026, per person, VAT included; every massage also comes in 90 minutes. At 26,000₫ to the US dollar, 450,000₫ is about US$17 and 520,000₫ about US$20. Note what the table does not say: nothing on our menu is a period treatment, and we do not sell any of these as one. The oil massage is the cheapest of them and on a period day usually the right one; sixty minutes at light pressure on day one is a better booking than ninety at firm pressure, and our page on 60 or 90 minutes explains why sixty is already a full massage. The treatment pages say more: oil, Vietnamese herbal, hot stone, foot and facial.

Can you use the steam or the jacuzzi on your period?

None of the eight books on our shelf addresses it. The clearest Vietnamese line is on Diag's medical page, written by BS. Đinh Xuân Diễm: "Không ngâm mình trong bồn tắm nước nóng hoặc lạnh kéo dài" ("do not soak for long in a hot or cold tub"), because a long soak raises the risk of infection; a quick warm shower is the alternative it gives. Many Vietnamese pages also advise against hot steam on period days, but we could not verify one written by a hospital or a doctor, so we mention it without leaning on it. Our suggestion, and it costs us a sale: on the days you bleed most, leave the herbal steam (from 250,000₫ each for two) and the jacuzzi (from 300,000₫ each for two) until after your period, and take your warmth from the herbal compress or the stones instead. If you take them later in the stay, our page on sauna before or after a massage gives the order we run.

Does massage make a period heavier?

This is the Vietnamese question, and it deserves a fair hearing. Phụ nữ Việt Nam, the Vietnam Women's Union newspaper, puts the common view plainly: "Chị em không nên đấm vùng thắt lưng trong kỳ kinh" ("women should not pound the lower back during a period"), because pounding is held to congest the pelvis and make bleeding heavier and longer; the same article advises against having the soles of the feet massaged hard. The reasoning comes from a way of reading the body through circulation, and it is a common view in Vietnam. On the other side, none of the eight books says massage makes a period heavier, and neither they nor the newspaper measured it; Werner's sections on painful periods and on PMS (pp. 448–449, 481–483) do not mention it at all. So we cannot tell you it happens, and we cannot tell you it does not. What both traditions agree on is force: no pounding, nothing deep. If the Vietnamese caution matters to you, it costs nothing to follow: lighter pressure, the feet left light or left out, and the reflexology for another day.

When to see a doctor instead

Werner separates painful periods with no underlying cause from pain that is a symptom of something else, and the signs of the second kind are worth knowing: pain that begins after years of relatively pain-free periods, pain outside your period, flow that is irregular or abnormally heavy, and pain medication that does not help (p. 449). Từ Dũ Hospital's advice comes to the same thing: if over-the-counter painkillers and home measures do not ease it, "bạn nên đến gặp bác sĩ", see a doctor. If you know you have endometriosis, tell us and mark the abdomen "avoid"; Werner asks for extra care with any abdominal work and says massage is "unlikely to change the course" of the condition, though its soothing, calming effect can improve life with a frustrating condition (p. 450). If there is any chance you are pregnant, tell us before choosing anything: Gall puts "possibly pregnant" among his total contraindications, and Werner notes that acupressure practitioners may advise against points believed to trigger contractions (p. 481); our pregnancy massage page explains the one treatment we offer then. A fever belongs on our page about when to wait. Our therapists are spa therapists, not doctors or gynaecologists, and they will not tell you what your pain means.

What to wear, and do you have to tell the therapist?

Folded grey spa towels stacked on a wooden counter beside a basin
Underwear stays on and a towel covers you throughout; only the area being worked on is uncovered.

Underwear stays on for the entire treatment, and you are covered by a towel throughout; only the area being worked on is uncovered, and it is covered again before the therapist moves on. So wear what you would normally wear on your period; nothing about the massage asks you to change it. If you would rather stay fully clothed, the Thai massage without oil is done in loose clothing. You do not have to mention your period at all; mention it only if you want something changed, and the three asks above are enough. You can pause for the bathroom at any point. And if you wake up on the day feeling awful, call us: we would rather move your booking than have you lie through an hour you are not enjoying.

For two

If one of you is on your period and the other is not, nothing about booking side by side has to change: the same length so that you finish together, and different pressure on each table. Two 60-minute oil massages are 900,000₫, about US$35. Our couple spa page shows the room and its private jacuzzi; if the jacuzzi is part of the plan, it can wait for another day of the stay, and what to expect at a couples massage covers the rest.

What this page is not

We are a hotel spa, not a clinic, and this is not medical advice. Nothing on our menu treats period pain, and we do not sell anything as a period treatment. Of the sources quoted, one is a pathology textbook for massage therapists, four are manuals for massaging at home, one is a hospital's patient page, one a doctor-written page from a diagnostics company and one a newspaper; where they disagree, we have said so rather than picked the convenient answer. Honest limits: no source here measured what massage does to a period, and the mechanisms on offer, from sacral reflexes to meridians to pelvic congestion, are ideas, not findings. If what you feel is more than your usual, the right first visit is a doctor, not us.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get a massage on your period?

Yes, gently. Ruth Werner's A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology (5th ed.) says massage carries "no specific risks" for premenstrual syndrome (p. 483) and "can be very helpful" for painful periods with no underlying cause (p. 449). It asks only that deep or intrusive work be avoided during a period, adding that most women "would probably also rather avoid deep abdominal work during their period" (pp. 448-449). Ask for no belly, gentle work on the lower back and hips, and say if lying face down is uncomfortable.

Should you massage your stomach during your period?

Not deeply, and most sources say not at all. Hoyme's The Complete Guide to Modern Massage says "do not massage the stomach (abdominal) region" for PMS and works the glutes and lower back instead (ch. 6, "PMS"); Werner places abdominal work "when the client is not menstruating" (p. 449); Mumford says to "be extra gentle during menstruation" (The Massage Bible, pp. 138-139). Từ Dũ Hospital in Hồ Chí Minh City recommends rubbing the lower belly, hips and lower back lightly a few days before the period (18 November 2020).

Can massage make your period heavier?

Nobody has measured it. A common Vietnamese view, stated in Phụ nữ Việt Nam (18 July 2022), is that pounding the lower back or massaging the soles hard during a period congests the pelvis and makes bleeding heavier and longer. None of the eight massage books on our shelf says massage makes a period heavier, and Werner's sections on painful periods and PMS (pp. 448-449, 481-483) do not mention it. Both traditions agree on force: no pounding, nothing deep.

Can you use a jacuzzi, hot tub or steam room on your period?

None of our massage books addresses it. Diag's medical page by BS. Đinh Xuân Diễm (30 June 2025, updated 14 October 2025) advises against soaking for long in a hot or cold tub during a period because of infection risk, suggesting a quick warm shower instead. At Nghê Prana our suggestion is to leave the herbal steam (from 250,000₫ each for two) and the jacuzzi (from 300,000₫ each for two) until after your period, and take warmth from the herbal compress or hot stones, on the back (menu read 1 October 2026).

What should I wear to a massage on my period, and do I have to tell the therapist?

Wear what you normally wear on your period. At Nghê Prana underwear stays on for the entire treatment and a towel covers you throughout; only the area being worked on is uncovered. You do not have to mention your period; say so only if you want something changed, such as no belly or lighter pressure on the lower back. You can pause for the bathroom or stop at any point.

When should you see a doctor instead of booking a massage for period pain?

When the pain stops you functioning, is new after years of relatively pain-free periods, comes outside your period, comes with irregular or abnormally heavy flow, or painkillers do not help: Werner lists these as signs the pain may be secondary to another condition (p. 449), and Từ Dũ Hospital says to see a doctor if over-the-counter painkillers do not ease it. Spa therapists are not doctors, and nothing on our menu treats period pain.
